Congratulations to our 2014 scholarship recipients!!

We have announced the winners of our 2014 scholarships.  Competition was tough this year, and we are dealing with a slightly tighter budget then years past.  Even with budget constraints, we were able to award $6000 in scholarships this year!  We will continue to contribute as much money as we can to our scholarship program.  We feel this is one of the most important things we can do to give back to our members and the community.  The recipients of the $1500 Kane County Corn Growers scholarships for 2014 were:

Jason Biddle

Mitchell Dienst

Tyler Fabrizius

Erin Kettelkamp

Congratulations to our winners!

2014 Kane County Corn Hybrid Plots

The Kane County Corn Growers Association invites you to participate in our 29th annual corn hybrid plot. The plot will be located at our permanent location at the corner of Route 47 and Beith Road, about 1½ miles north of Elburn.

Due to the overwhelming positive feedback on the 2013 plot, we are continuing to invest in randomized, replicated plots. As a reminder, we are working with an independent contractor to plant and harvest the plots. This will differ from a ‘side by side’ plot in the following ways:

  • Three, 40 foot long replications will be done for each hybrid in both the corn on corn and first year corn plots.
  • The placement of each hybrid will be randomly selected.
  • Each hybrid will be planted in four rows, but only the middle two rows will be harvested for data.
  • The published results will be an average of the replications on the corn on corn plot, and a separate average of the replications on the first year corn plot.
  • Please refer to the enclosed rules and entry form for more details.

The entry fees this year will be $125 for 1 hybrid, with a limit of three hybrids per company ($375 if three hybrids are submitted). Please note that each hybrid will be planted three times in the corn on corn plot, and three times in the 1st year corn plot. Plot space is limited to 50 total hybrids – submissions will be accepted on a first come first served basis.

Checks should be made out to the Kane County Corn Growers.
The entry form and fee must be received by March 14th at:
Kane County Corn Growers Association
P.O. Box 781
Elburn, IL 60119

March 22nd is also the deadline for delivery of seed to Elburn Coop at:
202 West North St

Also, please make any necessary changes to your contact information on the plot entry form.

First ever “Annual Meeting at the Plot” was held Monday evening.

Despite the warm weather, we had a great crowd attend our annual meeting which was held Monday September 9 at our plot near Elburn, IL.  A delicious plated meal was served to our guests provided by Nats on Maple of Sycamore, IL.  A business meeting followed the dessert course.  Paul Taylor, President of the Illinois Corn Growers, gave comments of what their organization is doing from the state level, and what the major issues are affecting corn markets and corn usage.  To close the evening we heard “Looking Forward to the 2014 Crop Year” as presented by Gary Schnitkey, extension specialist in the department of Agriculture & Consumer Economics at the University of Illinois.  A great time was had by all.  In the future, we hope to once again split our annual meeting and our “plot night” into separate events, and would be very interested to hear some new venue ideas from our members.  Feel free to email any and all comments and suggestions to jeffk@elburncoop.com anytime!
